Survivors of Human Trafficking and Domestic Abuse

Adolescents and young adults grappling with homelessness can also be survivors of sex or labor trafficking, found not only in urban centers but also in suburban areas, rural communities, and American Indian Reservations across the nation. Several studies have indicated that trafficking rates among this demographic, who are experiencing homelessness, vary from 19% to 40%.

  • It's important to note that certain youth facing homelessness possess an even higher vulnerability to trafficking than these statistics suggest. Insights gained from interviews with young individuals highlight several recurring themes and pathways:

  • The absence of fundamental necessities, such as lacking a secure place to sleep at night, frequently contributes to their exposure to trafficking situations.

  • Early exposure to adversity, like homelessness and exploitation, often commences well before reaching the age of 18.

  • LGBTQ+ youth are particularly at risk, encountering trafficking at elevated rates compared to their peers facing homelessness.

  • Youth who have previously been in foster care also encounter trafficking at elevated rates within the homeless population.
